Use the right word

Next time you failed to do your job, tell you boss it’s not a failure. It’s a deferred success. You are bound to impress your boss and expect a raise soon.

Seriously, the words you use in your daily conversation reflect a lot about your approach and your state of mind. One slip of a tongue can cost you your job or a relationship might end. So next time when you want to use the word “brainstorming”, just say “thought shower” instead and observe the effect.

This one time I was shopping for clothes and I saw a very fine piece of leather jacket in a store. I checked the price tag to find out it was way beyond my range of affordability. The sales guy was standing near me. I told him the piece of garmet was fine but it’s expensive. He said it’s not expensive, it’s precious. I was impressed by the quick response of the sales guy, but not enough to go ahead and purchase the jacket.

  • I love to argue with sales people especially in my area of expertise like computer hardware. You will be surprised at the amount of BS some sales guys spew.

  • You should be careful using these kinds of words. There’s a strong chance you’ll turn off the person. I, for one, have very little patience for BS words, and will probably tune you out after the first 2.

  • this is just doublespeak. big brother is watching you. in a starbucks for example they won’t say “can i help the next ‘customer’ please?”, instead, they’ll say “can i help the next ‘guest’ please?”. bullshit.

“The historical trends have led me to conclude that by doubling or even tripling our efforts of efficiency on the domestic front, it will yield a new entity of massive synergistic proportions. I therefore wish to present to you this exhibit (a composite of metallic and mineral elements) acquired from licensed retail channels as a symbol of our new alliance. Your acceptance of this strategy would launch a series of initiatives culminating in an event that would be in compliance with local and national authorities and internationally recognized by virtually all foreign governments. Your prompt feedback in this matter is in the best interests of all stakeholders.”

    PLAINTALK:
    “Will you marry me?”

  • I think what Umar refers to is called Sugarcoating. Sugarcoating often does not work in front of smart people. If you sugarcoat, they will immediately detect the BS and they will take you down.

  • what i was really refering to is called avoid using negative words even if the situation is desparate. Once my English professor said if you replace the world “problem” with “challange” it would suddenly give you the moral boost to work harder.
