Despite the fact taxis in Dubai are poorly managed, and people are suffering and cursing because of that, if you are a frequent user of taxis you will learn a great deal about Dubai culture, history, future prospects, and a lot more just by talking to the drivers. Each one has a different story to tell and you will be amazed by the diversity among the drivers.
One driver has been in Dubai for 20 years and has seen it all. He says Jumeirah Beach Road was really a beach road and Sheikh Zayed Road did not exist.
One driver says the construction in Dubai will never stop because by the time they finish the new developments it will be time to repair the old ones.
Another one turned out to be a womanizer and told me how he is having sex with girls from different countries. I found him the happiest taxi driver I have met.
One driver was a college graduate and was driving the taxi because his previous company had closed down and was waiting to get another job. His story was the saddest I have ever heard.
One driver thinks Pervez Musharraf is the best thing ever happened to Pakistan and everyone who thinks otherwise is a big fool.
One drivers showed me the building owned by the Bhutto family and disclosed the going rents for an office in that building. Turns out that Bhutto family earns millions just from rents out of that building alone.
Taxi is a fun way of getting to know Dubai if you can afford it and bear the annoyances it carry.
