Although the image of Dubai that is being portrayed is of a modern city with everything big, that’s not what Dubai is all about.
Dubai is notorious for its traditional markets, or Souk, as they call it. There is gold souk which is a paradise for jewellery lovers, spice souk where you can get all kinds of spices for dirt cheap.
Between these two famous souks lie a long stretch of shops owned by whole sellers and traders. There you can find almost everything under the sky, from electronics to clothings to furniture. And the prices are also much cheaper than the malls. Obviously there is no customer service and you have to search for what you are looking for, but you will find quality items if you look for it. In addition to that you can take a boat ride at the creek and experience the dhow.
But it’s not only about cheap shopping. It’s about culture and originality as well. You get to see how Dubai used to be, and what it went through to reach where it is right now. It’s about authentic Dubai experience.
I think Dubai souks is a must go for anyone visiting Dubai. You will find an original side of Dubai at the souks, different from the modernism, plastic and artificiality that you will come across in rest of Dubai.
