Results: Does Pakistan Deserve Democracy?

The results for last week’s poll are given below:

Interestingly, the audiences are almost equally divided between the two options. Someone said everyone will vote yes. That doesn’t appear to be the case.

In my opinion, considering the state Pakistan is in right now, democratic form of government will not work over here.

The reason is simple. In democracy, government is elected by the vote of the people. Now I am not degrading the population of this country, but it is a fact the people in Pakistan are not ready to understand and utilize the power of vote that they have. A major portion of the population of Pakistan lives under poverty. They have to struggle day and night to feed themselves. Many don’t have access to clean water, a huge number of children don’t go to schools, there are not enough doctors to treat the ill, electricity is still missing from many towns and villages, and even at places where there is electricity there are power outages and breakdowns. Life is too complex for a common man in Pakistan.

Under these circumstances, vote is last thing he would worry about. His first priority is to make ends meet somehow, to make sure he and his family is well taken care of, and to rest in peace that his loved ones are secure and protected. None of that is happening in Pakistan right now.

On top of that, when a person living under such dire circumstances is asked to vote, he doesn’t have a clue what to do. Most of the times his decision is based on peer pressure and fear of his friendly-neighborhood-gangsters who threat him to vote for a specific candidate or risk loosing his life.

As a result, the elected officials are not competent enough to work for the betterment of people who elected them.

We have seen this happening for last 60 years and it is still happening.

So I think democracy is not the best form of government for Pakistan until common people are provided the basic necessities of life. And to be very honest, common man never cares who the governor is as long as he is able to pay the bills.
