My hotel in Dubai

My initial adobe in Dubai was Desert Rose Hotel.

This is one of the better hotels I have ever stayed in Dubai. I got a studio apartment. In case you don’t know, studio apartment is a room with attached kitchen and an attached bathroom. It’s a shame to call it an apartment because it really is just a room. Yet, plenty of people live in studio apartments around the world because they are cheap and easy to maintain.

It takes around 30 minutes to drive from my hotel to my office in Dubai Internet City. But if the traffic is heavy then it can take up to an hour. My primary means of commuting is taxi and public transport. Since I live in the middle of a commercial zone, it is relatively easy to find a taxi, but it also depends on what time of the day it is. In the mornings I can usually find a taxi in 10 minutes but I have waited for an hour or so in the evenings. I am working on a hack to easily find taxi in Dubai, but that’s for another post.

I return from office by bus, or sometimes a coworker gives me a ride home. Catching a bus in Dubai is a totally different animal. The bus stop in front my office is always crowded in the evenings. At any given time there are more than 15 people waiting for the bus. However, the bus can take as long as two hours to arrive at the spot. Usually what happens is that if a bus is already full it doesn’t stop at the stop. So we see many full buses passing us by until an empty bus stops at our stop.

Good thing is that there are many private buses and mini vans that pick you up and drop you at a convenient location from where you can get to your destination relatively easier. They charge a few bucks more than the bus but it’s better than waiting for the bus forever.

Other than that most things like groceries and restaurants are available at a walking distance from my hotel, which makes it easy to get things. And it’s also not very far from major shopping malls so that’s also an advantage.
