This slashdot story reminded me of my first computer.
I got Atari 2600 when I was 5 year old, but I nevered considered that as a computer. I got my first computer when I was 8. It was an 8086 Processor (don’t remember the speed), 640KB RAM, 30MB HD, two 5.5″ floppy drives (360K), EGA monitor, and a color dot matrix printer. The year was 1989. I was one of the very few kids in my school who had an IBM PC. Most others were still playing with Atari or Commodore 64.
I primarily used my computer for games, but also learnt BASIC on it. It could easily run games like Police Quest and Monkey Island. Come to think about it, those are some of the best PC games I have ever played.
I have been hooked up to computers ever since, so much that it has become my career. I sometimes wonder what if my father hadn’t bought me that computer when I was 8. What would I be doing now?

man!!!!!
… sigh…
nice entry!! motivated me to put up my own blog entry on this.
Trust me if your dad had not bought you a computer back then, you would be leading a boring life right now. Honestly.
well well….I remember that how I bought my first computer…my father promised me that he would let me have a new PC if I secured A1 grade in Matric and than I remember very well how hard I worked day and night and at last succeded…hahaha…
My first computer was an 8086 too. We used to play chess on it. I had a DOS based typing program that my parents *encouraged* me to do my homework on but I never wanted to because everyone else wrote their reports out long-hand and since mine were typed they inevitably had to be longer….
*sigh*
