All right, I have completely migrated to gmail for all my email needs. Previously I was using POP client (Mozilla Thunderbird) and it was getting more and more cumbersome.
I have been hooked up to POP based email ever since I got access to the Internet. My several attempts of migrating to a web based email platfrom failed miserably because I was so used to the POP interface and features that nothing else worked.
But recently it was proving to be counter productive.
Since I spend most of my day at work (like everyone else), I installed Thunderbird on my work computer, and used it to download my emails. However, at home I would have no access to emails as all I emails would be on the work computer, so configured the Thunderbird at work download emails but leave them on server, so that I can download them at home, and clean up the mail server along the way. This worked for a while, but then I got too busy and more often than not, I hardly had the time to download emails at home. And then when I used to get time to get online from home, it used to take a long time to download all the emails from my mail server, most of which I had already read. Pure waste of time. And if an email had attachements then dealing with it always got on my nerves (I am on dialup at home, mind it). And then if I get a new email at home after work hours, and then next day I cannot access that email at work because it is downloaded at my home computer. If I had one computer for work and home, this wouldn’t be a problem at first place, but my employer has not been kind enough lately to give me a laptop computer.
So I had to come up with a solution. And migrating to gmail was the best option. Gmail allows you to send email using any email address. So I set up my mail server to forward all the emails to gmail, and set up my gmail account to send all emails as my primary email address. Voila! Problem solved!
Now not only I don’t have to worry about downloading emails at home, I can check my emails from home without getting online, right from my cell phone using the gmail mobile app.
Gmail rocks. I wonder why I didn’t use it before.

Interesting. I am pop3 fan myself. Gmail must be a bitch on dial up. But I guess different users have different needs and webmail is the best for you.
Umar – I do they same thing these days since my laptop is seriously disfigured – living on Thunderbird at home and a webmail client at work – which is crap – Gmail is a good option – and I think I might need to take the plunge too – or buy another laptop –
LOL yep buying a laptop is far easier
and even then I love the Thunderbird client to keep me a copy offline
even though i have a domain :p i still prefer using gmail, one address and one interface. been using it since it came out and haven’t regretted it once!
abdussamad: gmail doesn’t really bother that much on dialup. if the AJAX site doesn’t load in time, it gives the option to load the ‘regular html’ site so you can still see your emails.
plus, it makes replying/forwarding extremely easy and contact management pretty much automatic! with gtalk integration, you never need to add anyone on your list anymore. just exchange one email with them and they’re automatically on your list.
perfect!
yes… gmail is a bit slow on dialup… but thats because of ajax… i guess i’ll have to live with it for the greater good
