While on one hand I encourage having goals and plans for life, but on the other hand I have seen examples of people living life from one to day next without any major long term goals.
So the question is whether not this is a good strategy.
The answer is: Whatever works for you.
Some people need a target, a goal, a destination, to keep them motivated. Some people don’t work unless they want to get certain result.
Contrary to that, some people don’t really care about tomorrow. They work to make their today all right. Their life is based on the theory that if your every day is well spent then in the long run you will have a life well spent.
So which model should you follow? To answer that you will have to ask yourself a few questions.
Do you want to see yourself at a certain place or position 5 to 10 years from now?
If you have career or life goals, then you work each day, one step at a time, to get closer to that target. You estimate your moves, plan, revise, think, and take calculated risks.
If you don’t have any such dreams then you probably just work for the day. You have today’s task in mind and after finishing your currently assigned job you are a relaxed person.
Do you have an ultimate goal of life that you want to achieve and without that your life will be incomplete.
Since the purpose of your life is to achieve your goal, you spend most of the time thinking about it. You evaluate everything that you come across in terms how it will effect you in achieving your goal.
When you start your day do you plan your activities in detail or take things as they come?
If you start your day by making a strict plan and do everything possible to stick to it, this shows that you are quite disciplined in your life and don’t make spontaneous moves. But if you have no rules to follow, you can put off one thing for another because, after all, life is about enjoyment.
Do you strive to get the most out of the resources that you currently have?
If you want to do a certain task do you wait and wait until the time is right? or do you just start it with whatever you have right now and build on top of that as you go?
Answering these questions will help you figure out how you are living you life.
As I mentioned before, it is perfectly all right to live life one day at a time and it works for many people. Matter of fact, this can turn out to be a better strategy because you will not be disappointed if your goal is left unachieved because you had no goals to begin with. Just be satisfied with what you have today, and tomorrow will be in order.
Goal-oriented life helps you stay in focus. You are not easily distracted by people’s negative comments since you know what you are doing. And then nothing beats the feeling of happiness when you actually do achieve what you wanted.
