Living in New Dubai

Modern Dubai can be divided into three or so parts. There is Diera Dubai, which is old Dubai and that’s where Dubai originated from. Then there is Bur Dubai which is across the creek that divides Diera and Bur Dubai. This is relatively new development but still considered as original Dubai locality.

A view of Bur Dubai

If you go further South from Bur Dubai, beyond Al-Safa, Umm Suqeim and Al-Barsha on Sheikh Zayed Road, you will reach an area of Dubai commonly known as New Dubai.

New Dubai comprises of neighborhoods such as Greens, Springs, Meadows, Emirates Hills, Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeira, Jumeira Lake Towers, Discovery Gardens and Jumeira Village.

One thing to notice about neighborhoods in New Dubai is that they are all named in English, as opposed to Arabic names of districts in old Dubai (such as Al Mankhool, Karama, Satwa, Al Qusais, and so on).

These areas are mostly freehold, means expats can purchase property there.

The Towers of Dubai Marina

Not surprisingly, new Dubai is inhabited largely by expats belonging to high income group, as rents are also generally higher there.

Not only rents but other things like restaurants, hair saloons, grocery shops, and similar places are expensive than old Dubai. Even schools and hospitals are pretty expensive in new Dubai. In short its a posh area reserved for the elite class only.

Like all other posh areas, living in New Dubai has it’s perks. You get access to top class facilities and services Dubai can offer, from spas to golf courses. There is an abundance of 5-star hotels having bars and night clubs, offering no lack of options for night-life lovers. And not to mention the entertainment options like Wild Wadi and Aquaventure waterparks, indoor ski resort at Mall of the Emirates, and the water sports available at the Marina beach.

The New Dubai is really a new city, very different from the traditional and original Dubai, offering a very different lifestyle and experience, of course at an additional cost.

  • Interesting tone to this post-not quite sure whether to be ashamed or not to admit living in New Dubai! but helpful nonetheless for someone still only 3 weeks in Dubai :-)

You don’t need to be ashamed at all. I live there myself. You should
rather feel good about living in one of the most modern localities in
the region. But at the same time don’t forget that real Dubai, as it
used to be, is short distance away.

Although it looks quite cool, Dubai looks a little too manufactured for my taste. Is that a man made beach?

I have been in Dubai for the past 9 years and for me, the city has changed drastically. I live in Sheikh Zayed Road then and that was literally the end of Dubai. Then the new Dubai was built and I moved to Dubai Marina in 2007 and it was great how everything shifted further. I no longer went for lunch to Boardwalk nor the Irish Village or such beautiful places because simply they were too far. I stayed for 2 years in Marina and now have shifted to JLT.
Up to last year, the preference was clear that people did not want to stay in JLT because of the construction and the lack of tiled roads to walk or jog, I mean it was a mess. JLT last year was something and this year is totally something else. It is becoming a joy to live here. The lakes are already filled, the lake-walk all around is beautifully paved and lit, the landscaping around the lake where you can take your walks and socialize with other commnity members is beautful, full of trees and flowers and grass. There are already a few playground areas with swings and slides for kids. While you walk you can stop and sip a cup of coffee on the lake in one of the many cafes that opened or even eat in one of the many restaurants that offer really good food. If you feel like doing your hair or nails, there is nothing more than coffee shops here except beauty saloon! So just go down and be ready without driving any where!
If I have to compare both JLT and Marina, I would choose JLT as the way it is turning is just a real community versus a few buildings built beside each other. Also, it is so quiet and tranquil here :)
Love new Dubai and love the pics you have posted here! Thanks for sharing!
