You shouldn’t treat laptops as your primary data store, reliable as they may be. You might drop the laptop accidently and kill the HDD, for example. I have a habit of putting every file of any value on both my home desktop and my laptop, and synchronizing religiously (at least 3 times per week). I use Unison over SSH to sync between the machines. Extremely important files (SSH/PGP keys, copies of personal documents, etc.) also get synchronized to a machine at work. I know I should burn CDs every once in a while, but I’m too lazy to do that (last personal files CD I burned was in 2003).
Moral of the story: backup, backup, backup.
