This is second song by James Blunt that I liked this year. The lyrics are amazing. Although I haven’t been able to figure out whether it’s a break-up song or please-come-back song. Or does it mean you are leaving me but you will never be able to forget me, and I can’t live without you (all that shit)? Nevertheless it’s a great song.
Now I want to listen to other songs by James Blunt.

I think so far Blunt’s best song in my opinion is ‘No Bravery’…if you haven’t heard it..check this out:

Be cautioned the video accompanying the song has some rather disturbing images..but for good reason.
in case the above link for NO BRAVERY does not work..try this:

BTW, James Blunt is a GULF WAR veteran so it makes the song even more relevant and ironic at the same time.
sorry for the three separate comments. you may delete them after you’ve read them.
indeed.
james blunt is awesome.
Been meaning to get his album for ages, turns out he’s come out with a 2nd album.
“You’re beautiful” and “Goodbye my lover” are awesome songs! Haven’t heard any more songs of his but these 2 were enough to convince me.
He was a major or captain [I forget] and served in the royal guard to the queen [learned that from an interview of his I saw] in the British Army.
Goodbye My Lover – is about him leaving to war… leaving behind his lover. I think it is the most beautiful goodbye song I have ever heard and the love lyrics make me think of how wonderful and beyond words it is to truly love someone with all your heart.
this song is actually about his lover dieing during child birth.hence the lyric , “so i took whats mine by ETERNAL right (baby)”you will agree with me when u listen to his song cry on utube!!! the link is below

I don’t think that line refers to a baby. To me, it is referring to sex or her virginity. Everyone has a different opinion on the meaning of this song. Whatever the opinions are, it is a powerful song for sure.
Goodbye my lover…is the songs that is the helping hand for my sister who losts her husband just 3 months ago with a little 4 years girl and 8 months pregnant for her little boy. This song had a special story on my sister´s life right now, it is a goodbye from her husband who is in heaven.
Thanks James B. God bless you forever!!!!
I use this as my “getting over a broken heart” song a the moment and downloaded his albumn after hearing his hits Your beautiful and Wisemen. My next best is Cry.
His albumn is my fav at the moment; the words of his songs are touching, makes u think and the music comforting. Thats my two cents
Ditto to what Carla said. I’ve been trying to find out what the song was written about ever since I first heard it. My sister also lost her husband less than a year ago. They have 3 children, one of whom is autistic. When we heard “Goodbye My Lover” we were in tears, as it was so like her husband speaking to her from heaven. I absolutely love all of “Back to Bedlam” and I’m yearning for the day that James comes to north Florida to play!
This song directly applies to me!!!Its as if he lived my life and created my song through his talent!!!
i failed to get the realy message in this song. i sometimes think its a breakup song or a good bye song to some1 who has passed away.
but i like it anyways
Our interpretation of ‘Goodbye My Lover’ is that the guy has had an affair with a married/taken woman. ‘I saw the end before we’d begun, yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I’d won’ He knows he can’t be with her properly from the start because she is already in a relationship, but she was blinded by lust for him, and he took advantage of this (I took what’s mine by eternal right (Sex!!))
He then falls in love with the woman, and changes his dreams in life to include her, but her initial lust wears down, she is not in love with him, and she ends the affair.
There are so many different ways this song can be interpreted, but this seems to make sense of all the lyrics as far as we can see!!!
actually, it was just written for an ex girlfriend whom he was deeply in love with and thought he would marry but she left him. kind of a let down, i know. everyones take on it is much more interesting. oh well.
