Four must-visit websites for Dubai’s women

We talk a lot about how technology can help make our lives easier, particularly here in Dubai. However, there’s one perspective we haven’t mentioned yet: Dubai’s professional women. People flock to Dubai for the quality of life and high-paying jobs, and there are more women than ever working in the city and enjoying the world-famous lifestyle.

Barriers still remain for women in the workplace around the world, and Dubai is no exception; thankfully, websites are popping up to support local women as they work, play and gain the confidence to achieve their professional goals.

Whether you’re researching jobs in tech, the best Friday brunch or confidence-boosting beauty tips like underarm whitening products and Brazilian blowouts, here are some of the best websites for professional women in Dubai:

1. Dubai Women Establishment: Supporting women in tech and business

Middle Eastern science blogger Nehal Lasheen often writes about the difficulties of being a woman in tech. She says: “Some of the most important barriers to leadership for women in academia, in Al-Ma’aitah’s opinion, are the lack of access to career advice, mentoring and socialising for women faculty”.

Thankfully, the DWE is here to help. Established in 2006, the group offers a range of initiatives including professional development sessions, networking groups and leadership programs; they even lobby businesses for better childcare options. The group caters to a range of career paths, so check out the website for advice and local events.

2. Huda Beauty: Look good, feel good

Don’t let insecurities hold you back: confidence is everything for women trying to get ahead. Looking and feeling your best always helps, and Huda Beauty is your new BFF. One of Dubai’s best bloggers and a nominee for Emirates Woman of the Year 2011, she offers moxie-boosting tips to look your best in the boardroom or at brunch. Her makeup tutorials and DIY tips are the secret of Dubai’s most fashionable women, and she reviews all sorts of cosmetics and creams, from whitening products right through to eye palettes and shampoo.

3. Twitter: Industry news and networking

While a few bad apples might damage its reputation, Twitter is a must for modern, professional women. It is the ideal place to ask questions, make important contacts and keep up to date with tech news and your industry. Whether you need a reliable hairdresser before an important meeting, or want to meet other women in your profession, the collective mind of Twitter will be there to help; just make sure to keep your tweets professional.

4. Time Out Dubai: Get the most out of the city
Need to meet a business client for a lunch meeting, or network with others in your industry? Don’t make a bad impression at an empty restaurant or overpriced cafe, when a little research at Time Out Dubai will set you straight. It’s not all business, however: unwind on the weekend with the site’s expert tips for shopping, cultural activities and community meet-ups too.

These are just a few of the innumerable websites offering initiatives, industry updates and lifestyle tips for working women in Dubai and the Middle East; there are many more excellent examples that aren’t covered here. What is your favourite site, or if you’re not a woman yourself, your wife’s, sisters’ or boss’s favourite?
