Dubai in the long run

DubailandWith all the development in Dubai in full swing, some people are regarding it as an over-inflated balloon waiting to burst.

They do make sense.

It’s hard to predict the future of Dubai, say, after 15 years. It might become a huge tourist destination after the completion of DubaiLand and other similar attractions, but whether or not it will end up being a well desired place to live is yet to be seen.

Here is the thing. Almost all housing projects in Dubai are being built at such a big scale both in terms of size and money, that it would be out of reach of normal people. They are going to cost so much that only a small percentage of people in the world would be able to afford it. How many of them would be willing to live in Dubai is a question yet to be answered. Are we going to see a correction in real state prices after 5 years?

So if shit hits the fan and Dubai couldn’t find enough people to live in it’s high rise apartment buildings, then how will it look like in the year 2030? Is Dubai on its way to be the biggest and latest ghost town of the world? Are these skyscrapers destined to be… empty? Just the thought scares the creeps out of me.

I really don’t know how the planners have decided to keep the ball rolling for a longer duration of time. All the biggest cities of the world have gone through centuries of evolution to be where they are, but Dubai is going through an artificially created cultural revolution, and no one knows what will happen in the end.

I stay optimistic about the future of Dubai, and am committed to enjoy it while it lasts.

And of course I will keep blogging about Dubai, good bad or ugly. Thanks for staying with me.
