Dear Shahid Afridi

When will you grow up?

How long it will take you to learn that you cannot hit a six on every ball?

There is a word called responsibilty. It means that when you know you are the last recognized batsman and there is still a big score to chase, you are supposed to stay there and save your fucking wicket.

You don’t try to break records at such occasions.

Sure, you needed two sixes to be the player who has hit most sixes ever, but why can’t you think about the entire team?

Don’t you know the importance of winning the game?

Do you realize that if you had stayed until the end and not tried to hit big shots on every ball, you could have won it for your team, for Pakistan?

Why do you feel insulted when you miss a shot?

It’s not a big deal, my friend. Everybody misses.

No one is going to take anything away from you. No one is going to challange the fact that you are the fastest batsman in the world. Nothing will change if you just played with the game in mind.

In fact, people will love you more when you win matches for your team.

You can do that. It’s easy.

We don’t need you if you kept on hitting like a 16 year old and giving away your wicket, and that too at a time when the team needs your presence the most.

That would make you a burden. You will become a liability.

Soon you will be old, unable to win matches, and not required by the team.

You will be replaced by some other kid, who would have learned the lesson from you. The lesson that you did not learn. You will be history.

You will be remembered as someone who could bat well once in a while but never helped the team win matches.

You will not be recognized and honored as a great cricketer.

But it seems like you don’t care. You don’t care about winning. You don’t care about your country. You don’t care about getting your name written in golden words in the book of great sportsmen.

The only thing you care about is that you have to hit a six on the next ball, even if the team has set up the field accordingly and is waiting for you to make a mistake. You fall for their tricks every single time.

It’s very easy to get you out, you know that? Even a high school team can get you out. It’s as simple as keep throwing loose balls at you and you attempt to hit big on every one of them. Sooner or later you will give an easy catch and bingo, you are out!

You are out, Shahid Afridi. Out of the team, that is. And out of people’s mind.

Only if you didn’t change your style.

  • Well, what does the Pakistani team expect from him by sending him at #8? And I strongly believe that this player should be sent at #8. He cannot play slow and that’s why he should be sent in the lower order.

I guess you haven’t still realized that he cannot play the way people want him to. He cannot change! Now, it’s upto the Selectors to include or exclude him in the team.

I am no advocate of him, just that by seeing his performance & style in this series, he delivered 25 odd runs in almost every game and that too pretty quickly.

I think that it’s the top order who’s to blame, in both of the final games they scored less than 25 and were removed before 10 overs

  • umar

salman, i agree with you partially. but currently the top order of pak cricket team is not at all experienced so i wont really blame them for the lost matches. but afridi has been around for a long time to take responsibility of a lost match… specially when he is the only hope for winning, and when he knows the strategy of opposite team to get him out by deliberately giving him chances to hit in the air.
He can hit all he wants when the game is not at stake and there are already enough runs on the board.

  • Reaver

afridi is great. it wasnt his fault. he played well. thank you afridi.

  • Dan

Nah, i reckon he should keep playing the way he does. Thats the only way he knows. Its a rare talent that he posseses and whether or not it works, he still gives the other team nightmares. Go on Afridi.

  • Chris

Well, this guy has one of the best pairs of eyes in business today. He has excellent hand and eye coordination. Only problem had been his shot selection which is improving significantly.

His body language is excellent on field except that blunder of turning on his heel.

He reminds of Great Sir Garfield Sobers. A right-hander Sobers. Hard hitting middle order batsman, spinner as well as medium pacer.

  • SOHAIB SHAH
