Dubai has a tropical desert climate becauseof its location within the Northern desert belt.

Summers are extremely hot and humid,with an average high around 40 °C yet usually higher than 40, and overnight lows around30 °C.

Sandstorms During the summer season, a low pressure areadevelops over Dubai forcing strong north-westerly winds to blow from Saudi Arabia.

These winds,also known as Shamal in Arabic, become gusty and unpredictable on reaching Dubai.

Shamalboost up the desert sand and reduce visibility and the sandstorms may last for several days.

Following are some notable sandstorms that hit Dubai during the last few years.

On April 18, 2008 a severe sandstorm hits Dubai and reduced visibility to 1,500 metres.

On March 10, 2009 a moderate sandstorm reached Dubai which lowered down the visibility andtemperature.

On March 2, 2010 Strong winds caused sandstormsin Dubai and other regions of United Arab Emirates.

On January 28, 2011 a sandstorm hit Dubai for a short time.
