Image via WikipediaI have previously talked about carpooling in Dubai and the way government is not sure how to deal with it.
Finally they have come to their senses and came up with this.
Yes, a full fledged website to encourage car pooling.
The way it works is that now you have to register yourself as driver or passenger on the website. The driver will be issued a permit officially allowing them to carpool. Drivers and passengers can find each other through the website. Passengers can contribute to the cost of fuel incurred by the driver. Everyone wins.
Of course, you don’t need a permit if you are carrying your family or coworkers in the car. This is only for those who want carry people they don’t know.
So far this looks pretty good. My only concern is the hassle of actually going through the procedure to register the driver and passenger. Not sure how many people will have internet access to do that.
Let’s see how this works out.

Hi Umar, good to see your blog is active and thriving! I had removed it from my iGoogle homepage a long time ago, (don’t know what I was thinking lol). Anyway it’s back on my iGoogle now so will get updates from you.
I like the theme of this blog, i.e Dubai from a Pakistani’s viewpoint, it’s always interesting to learn more about what all is out there in the world.
On a related note, I think I need to resurrect my own haroonbarlas.com blog, it’s been a really long time since I did anything on it, not to mention it’s down and collecting dust
I agree, it’s a sensible move, for once. It didn’t need all the bureaucracy though. That’s totally unnecessary, they could simply just allow people to carpool and not interfere.
