Book Review: Online Danger
One of the common occurring events these days is data breach and it seems like no one is immune to it.
Almost every day we hear about organizations losing confidential data due to a breach, or vulnerabilities discovered in a hardware or software platform. Terms like phishing, ransomware, and identify theft are becoming part of standard vocabulary.
Truth be told, gone are the days when security and privacy could be taken for granted on the internet. These are the times when everyone, and that includes you and me, can be a potential target to cyber criminals, and if we don’t take the necessary precautions, it’s not a matter of if but when one of those cyber criminals will be successful in their attack and be able to bring about real damage that can affect one’s life in ways that go beyond just internet and can very well affect someone physically as well.
This is why this book, Online Danger by Dr. Eric Cole, is highly relevant right now.
Just like you need to know what kind of dangers exist in your neighborhood in order to protect your home from those dangers, you also need to know the ways cyber criminals can reach you so that you can use this knowledge to protect yourself.
The book Online Danger tries to achieve this by explaining in simple terms how and why internet has become a dangerous place, what are the ways the bad guys can get you, what could be potential consequences that can extend to your real life as well, and what you can do to minimize the chances of becoming a victim.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about dangers of internet and how to protect yourself. I love the no nonsense and “tell it like it is” tone of the book which has the potential of worrying the reader but at the same time gives hope that it is possible to protect yourself by taking the specific measures mentioned in the book. Just like you would never leave you home unlocked, it doesn’t makes sense to venture online without taking those precautions.
Stay safe everyone.
